Healing of the Wrathful Son – Titian
St. James, in his Epistle writes: “Is anyone among you sick? Let them send for the priests of the Church, and let the priests pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord” (Ja 5:14).
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is intended to strengthen those who are being tried by illness (cf. Catechism, 1511). In this sacrament, the priest prays over the ill or dying person and anoints the head and hands, as he prays: “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.” This prayer indicates that the sacrament is not only for physical healing, but also for spiritual aid and the remission of sins.
