A sacrament is a visible sign of the invisible reality of grace, which is a participation in God’s divine life and brings about our sanctification. The grace of the sacraments is conveyed by a duly ordained minister of the Church upon one who seeks mystical and prayerful union with the Holy Trinity. The sacramental sign is not only a symbol; it effects what it signifies, such that, for example, the person blessed with water in Baptism is truly cleansed of original sin and all personal sins. Each of the seven sacraments was instituted by Christ, and those who receive them draw ever closer to the likeness of Christ in divine adoption and inheritance.
